An element is made out of only one type of atom. When Magnesium and oxygen comes together it turns into a white powder, that is a solid. A compound is made out of more than two elements chemically joined together. It has not been proven that this reaction can be reversed. The burn has a really bad reaction when touching the smoke. It is Mg + 0-> MgO
